McIntosh County

McIntosh County is a rural, coastal area located about halfway between Savannah and Jacksonville, FL. Interstate 95 runs through the county. McIntosh has an abundance of rivers for fishing as well as ocean access which supports commercial fishing and shrimping, an important industry of the area.

The population of McIntosh County has risen 1.3%. The numbers increased from 10,975 in April of 2020 to 11,123 in July of 2021.

How does McIntosh County Compare?

Underage Drinking

Beginning in 8th grade, the number of alcohol-free students in McIntosh County begins to drop below state averages. According to the Georgia Student Health Survey, 87% of McIntosh County 8th graders had not used alcohol within the past 30 days, as compared to the state average of 94%.

Only 77% of McIntosh County 12th graders had not had alcohol within the past 30 days, as compared to the state average of 83%. It’s still important to note that the majority of students are not using alcohol.

Underage Vaping

In McIntosh County, vaping rates increase in 7th grade and steadily increase into high school. The majority of middle schoolers are not vaping.

When students enter high school, vaping becomes more common, although never rising above 21%. The average percentage of students who vaped in the last 30 days is higher in McIntosh County when compared to the state overall. Still, the majority of students have not vaped in the past 30 days.

100% of 6th graders in McIntosh County had not used marijuana in the past 30 days. However, 10% of 8th graders had used marijuana in the past 30 days, compared to only 5% of students in Georgia overall.

Marijuana use in McIntosh County high school students is higher than the state average and increases with each grade level. By senior year, 23% of students had used marijuana in the past 30 days. However, it’s important to note that most students are not using marijuana.

Most middle schoolers don’t smoke cigarettes. Over 98% of McIntosh County middle schoolers had not smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days.

As students enter high school, cigarette smoking becomes more common but is still unpopular among students. There are higher rates of smoking among McIntosh County youth. However, the majority of high school students are not smoking. Roughly 82% of McIntosh County high schoolers had not smoked in the past 30 days.
